A big welcome to the newest member of the metro area cupcake family – Cupcakes Actually in Fairfax, Virginia!

To get the cupcake party started, Cupcakes Actually is having a block party this Saturday afternoon from 12:00 to 4:00pm. I haven’t heard anything about free cupcakes, but it should be a good time nonetheless!
The cute shop features fun flavors like Italian Stallion (Butter Cake with Cassata filling and Italian Buttercream), Mint Julip (Chocolate Cake with Mint Buttercream), Champagne Taste (Champagne Cake with pink Champagne Buttercream), and Caribbean Queen (Pina Colada Cake with Coconut Rum Frosting), to name a few! Take a look at pictures of them from CA's website below. You can take a look at all 19 flavors by checking out their menu. You won’t see it on there, but they have a weekly Gluten Free cupcake as well.
According to their website, most of CA’s cupcakes go for $3.05 with the exception of Cherries Jubilee ($3.50) and their signature dipped cupcakes: Dipped Chocolate, Dipped Caramel, and Dipped Peanut Butter, which are all $3.75.
So swing by Cupcakes Actually this Saturday and give them a try! They are located in Fairfax Corner at:
11944 Grand Commons AveFairfax, VA 22030

Monday – Saturday, 10am – 9pm
Sunday, Noon – 6pm

This is great, a place I have an excuse to stop by on my way home. And not far from Wegman's, so I'll get a two-for-one reason to go by there! :)

I tried them a few weeks ago when it first opened. I think the cake is delicious but the frosting is subpar. It it is too light... almost tastes like whipped cream.

Baked & Wired still my favorite :-)

Stopped by Cupcakes Actually this week. It's a very nicely designed store, on the small side, but it has alot of light. It was a mid-afternoon visit and there were plenty of customers. I tried five flavors:

lemon: Best of the bunch. Tangy lemon/vanilla bean frosting with lemon curd in the center. The cake itself was kind of dry but the frosting/curd-to-cake filling made up for it. Definitely a keeper if you like lemon meringue pie.

strawberry: The cake was non-descript but you could definitly taste the strawberry puree in the frosting. The frosting tasted like a strawberry milkshake.

flourless chocolate: The frosting didn't have much flavor but the cake tasted true to its name.

chocolate dipped: Chocolate cake with a vanilla/white frosting (almost marshmallow-y) dipped in chocolate. The vanilla frosting didn't have a lot of flavor but overall this was pretty decent.

red velvet: Good cream cheese frosting, slightly tangy. The cake wasn't much to talk about but overall it's a good cupcake to add to a variety. That being said, RVC is -- IMHO -- best appreciated taste-wise in layer cake form.

Cupcakes Actually is a good diversion if you are in the Fairfax Corner/Fair Oaks area. If you need a cupcake fix and don't want to drive all the way into Georgetown (for GC or B&W), then this is the place.

wow! Thank you for the awesome review! I'm sure this will be very helpful to people :) It sounds like everyone is saying the frosting is a little plain, but it definitely sounds like it's worth checking out!

I have been reading a lot of good things about this place all over the blogosphere so I made the trek there a few weeks ago. I have to disagree with you guys on the icing - I am not a fan of the overly sweet traditional icings and found this icing to be right up my alley! Very creamy and yes, light, but with a very fresh flavor. The dipped cakes are to die for! I've had Georgetown, Magnolia and Sprinkles and feel CA trumps them all. I will def. be making special trips to get these cupcakes!
