Maryland Cupcake Wars

Anyone see the Recession Fuels Cupcake Wars article in the Gazette last week? Looks like Maryland cupcake competition is heating up as the Bethesda location of Georgetown Cupcake is coming soon. You can read the whole piece by clicking here, but I’ve taken the main points below for you:
Competition to create — and sell — the ultimate cupcake is heating up in the Maryland and Washington, D.C., region, as the culinary craze gains steam in metropolitan areas, driven by the recession.
Georgetown Cupcake, which jump-started the movement locally in 2008 when it opened a location in Washington, is preparing for its second location in Bethesda this fall.
"We are opening our second shop in response to the overwhelming demand we've had from our customers in Montgomery County," said Sophie LaMontagne, who owns the high-end Georgetown bakery with her sister, Katherine Kallinis. "We think cupcakes have, and will continue to be, an affordable treat, even during recessions."
Cupcake businesses are doing better than most bakeries during the recession because smaller treats tend to sell better during hard times, said Paul Sapienza, vice president of operations for Retail Bakers of America in McLean, Va.
"People like to award themselves with little treats that don't cost much," Sapienza said.
Competition in Bethesda is growing stiff with the arrival of Georgetown Cupcake, which sells thousands of cupcakes each day and employs more than 60 part-time workers at its current location, LaMontagne said.
The renewed interest in cupcakes has brought in many customers who order cupcakes in lieu of traditional wedding cakes, she said.
Not too far from Georgetown Cupcake's proposed site in downtown Bethesda, Leslie Goldman-Poyourow is using the cupcake allure to supplement her creative cake shop, Cakes by Leslie. She said customers are often coming in to sample the miniature treats and then buying party cakes, too.
"I think that people are so used to eating very low-quality food in general, and around here, there's not that many great bakeries. Some of these new places actually have a great taste, but they have to keep the quality up," she said.
Goldman-Poyourow, who has owned her cake shop for 14 years and just moved it from Gaithersburg in October, said the cupcake market is becoming oversaturated, with many people "hyper-focused" on them. She suspects the trend may die down soon, with Maryland on the tail end of the craze.
"There will always be something new," she said.

Georgetown's Strawberry Cupcake

If you're a Strawberry Cupcake lover and have yet to pick one up from Georgetown Cupcake, you better hurry! Tomorrow is the last day of June, and so ends this flavor of the month!

I must say, it was pretty amazing. It has chunks of strawberries both in the frosting and in the cake. The frosting is one of their standard cream cheese frostings and fit perfectly with the fruity cake. Baked & Wired Strawberry cupcakes are still my favorite, but these were very good!

Owen Wilson loves cupcakes!

Pretty much everyone knows Owen Wilson, Reese Witherspoon, and Paul Rudd are in town filming their new romantic comedy, “How Do You Know,” and according to NBC Owen Wilson took some time off the set to drop by Georgetown Cupcake:
WASHINGTON --
Actor Owen Wilson was spotted eating in Georgetown Tuesday.
After dining at the Peacock Café, he stopped by Georgetown Cupcake for a red velvet and a white chocolate raspberry cupcake, according to Georgetown Cupcake. He ate alone at a table in the store.
According to the staff, Wilson dropped by Georgetown Cupcake on Monday but it was closed.
My question is, how in the world did he manage to snag that one lonely table! It’s always taken!

Baked & Wired In The Atlantic Magazine

One of the blog readers recently pointed out an article to me in the March ’09 edition of the Atlantic having to do with cupcakes – The Not So Guilty Pleasure.

Photo from Article, Image Credit - Iwan Bagus
Author Corby Kummer believes “a good cupcake has all the frosting you really want at a birthday party but can’t ask for. It’s celebratory but restrained, a suitably small indulgence for tough times. And, surprisingly, a cupcake can be a smaller indulgence than a wholesome-seeming muffin: under the icing, as any baker knows, there’s practically no difference.”
Kummer has tasted cupcakes from New York to DC, and writes that “The only just-right cupcake I’ve found so far was at Baked and Wired, a hip Georgetown café. The plain white icing on its “birthday” cupcake (pictured here) had exactly the right crackle when I bit into it, and the chocolate cake was moist, airy, and not too rich.”
Wow! Quite flattering for B&W! I wonder what he thought of the Strawberry cupcake…pictured above but not mentioned. I think it’s amazing! Nice to see Baked & Wired receiving credit where it’s due!

Baked & Wired Cupcake Art

Chocolate Peppermint Cupcakes, and other Holiday Flavors

Photo from BashDC.com

Can you believe it's December already?!? Crazy! One good thing about a new month though, new cupcake flavors! So for all you Georgetown Cupcake lovers out there (and from that constant line around the corner, I know there's a lot of you!) Georgetown Cupcake's new monthly flavors are Chocolate Peppermint, Gingerbread, and Snowball (Coconut), as well as Hanukkah, Christmas, and New Years Eve-themed Cupcakes. Be sure to stay tuned later this month when Georgetown Cupcake will be releasing their 2009 Seasonal Flavor listing.

And speaking of Chocolate Peppermint Cupcakes, when I was in Alexandria this past weekend I stopped to have brunch at one of my favorite places: Bread & Chocolate on King Street in Old Town. If you've been here you know they have a large dessert case at the front of the restaurant, and sure enough they had cupcakes! I was way too stuffed from my Mediterranean Omelet to even fathom eating a cupcake, but I took a picture for you guys. They have Chocolate Peppermint as well as traditional Vanilla and Chocolate. They're $2.50 each or $9 for 4.

Chocolate Peppermint is on the left, Chocolate & Vanilla on the right.

Couture Cupcake Locations

Couture Cupcakes, from the CC Gallery
As some of you cupcake lovers might know, Couture Cupcakes are now available at both ACKC locations - the one in Logan Circle, DC and the one in Alexandria, VA - but they're also now available at Cafe Tu-O-Tu in Georgetown! Cafe Tu-O-Tu is Mediterranean Cuisine with a Turkish twist. The Cafe serves breakfast specials, large lunch salads and panini style sandwiches, late evening snacks, and of course - Couture Cupcakes!
I gave them a ring to see what the deal is, and found out they have the cupcakes delivered every Tuesday and Thursday. The flavors change every week, so you can probably give them a call at 202.298.7777 to see what the flavors are that week.
Cafe Tu-O-Tu (named after DC's area code) is located at 2816 Pennsylvania Avenue, NW, Washington, DC 20007.

Baked & Wired's Carrot Cake Cupcake Recipe!

OMG is this serious?!? Baked & Wired's Carrot Cake Cupcake is the best Carrot Cake I have had in all the DC/Metro Area (Hello Cupcake has the best Gluten-Free Carrot Cake), and it looks like they've posted their recipe on the Taste of Georgetown website! You can see it by clicking here, or check it out below:

Baked and Wired Carrot Cake
Cake:
o 2 ¼ (11.5) oz. all-purpose flour
o 2 cups sugar
o 2 teaspoon baking soda
o 1 teaspoon cinnamon
o ½ teaspoon salt
o 2 cups shredded carrots
o 1 ½ cup canola oil
o 4 eggs
o 1 cup chopped pecans, toasted, and cooled
Pre-set oven to 350 degrees. Grease and flour two 9” pans. Whisk together all dry ingredients. Blend all ingredients at low speed, except nuts. Whisk with attachment on mixer for 3 minutes on high. Stir in pecans. Bake for 34 minutes, remove and allow to cool.
Cream Cheese Icing:
o 1 stick butter, softened
o 1 lbs. 8 oz. powdered sugar
o 1 teaspoon vanilla
o 8oz. Cream Cheese
o 1 tablespoon evaporated milk (may not need)
Blend together all the ingredients, and apply to cup cakes. Spread additional ½ cups of chopped and toasted pecans over the icing for decoration. Makes 16 Cup Cakes.

Taste of Georgetown (Cupcakes)!

Planning on hitting up this weekend's Taste of Georgetown? Make sure you stop by Georgetown Cupcake and Baked & Wired's tents! They're both slated to be serving up some cupcakes at the annual event.
Taste of Georgetown is this Saturday, October 11th, from 11am to 4pm. Personally I think the whole thing is a bit chaotic, but if the weather is nice and you have patience, go for it! Entry into the Taste of Georgetown does not require a ticket, but tasting any of the restaurant/bakery fare does! One tasting ticket is good for one tasting. $5: One Tasting Ticket, $20: Five Tasting Tickets. Tickets can be purchased the day of the event, or you can skip the line and purchase them by clicking here.
And just an FYI - for the month of October, Georgetown Cupcake is offering a couple special flavors - Pumpkin Spice and Chocolate Orange. Has anyone tried them? They'll also be offering Halloween Cupcakes during the week of Halloween (October 26 - 31); but they can be special ordered for the entire month of October.

Cupcake Wars - Week III

Are we really halfway through the Cupcake Wars already??? When I opened the Food & Dining section of the Washington Post this morning, I was super excited because this week Yonan and his team broke down two of my favorites, Georgetown's Baked & Wired and Alexandria's Lavender Moon.

Photograph by James M. Thresher for the Washington Post
Baked & Wired's Chocolate Peanut Butter Cupcake

Baked & Wired is a favorite spot because of all the flavors I've tried, there were only two I didn't like (Red Velvet - just because it didn't taste like Red Velvet - and Vanilla, because it was dry). The rest of the flavors more than make up for these two, like Carrot Cake and Strawberry, which are good enough to make you seriously consider eating two in a row. Their cupcakes are rich and moist and their staff is cheerful and nice. This is where our DC/Metro Cupcake Group had our first meetup!
Lavender Moon is one of the newest cupcake spots to hit the DC cupcake scene; I just visited for the first time about two weekends ago. I thought the flavors were really original and tasty, especially the Peach Meringue Pie which I proceeded to take down like Kobayashi in a Hot Dog eating contest. Yonan and his team didn't agree with my take on Lavender Moon, giving it a lower score than Buzz Bakery! Take a look at what Yonan had to say on Lavender Moon:
"These were too much, and not in a good way: too much (messy) frosting, too much going on generally (the peach has a bottom crust, cake, filling and frosting) and too many off-putting flavors. The suntan lotion we thought of when tasting the coconut and the perfumed sachet brought to mind by the chocolate-lavender caused us to break our silence-during-tasting rule by gasping and groaning uncontrollably."

The "Suntan Lotion" cupcake from Lavender Moon
It's interesting they were overwhelmed by the lavender in the Chocolate Lavender flavor, because when I tried this flavor a couple weeks ago, I commented in my posting that I didn't even taste the lavender! Yonan and his team thought the Triple Callebaut Chocolate "with its soft cake and airy, whipped frosting" was the "Best of the Bunch." You can see a picture of it below. In the end, they gave Lavender Moon a lowly 5.3 out of 10. Last week Buzz Bakery landed a 5.8! I have been in total agreement with Yonan's and his teams reviews thus far, but I don't agree in the least that Buzz is better than Lavender Moon.

Lavender Moon's Triple Callebaut Chocolate

On a more positive note, Baked and Wired finally pleased the team, scoring a whopping 8.6 out of 10. This I agree with. Delighted with finally finding some cupcakes worth eating, Yonan exclaims "Hallelujah, these are cupcakes! We love the folded parchment liners, which make these easier to unwrap. And then we love what's inside: buttery, mostly moist cakes with good, simple flavors and a nice, thick layer of not-too-sweet, fresh-tasting frosting. The vanilla cakes tended to be a tad dry, perhaps from overbaking, but all in all, it was a selection we'd be happy to tuck into again."

Baked & Wired's Vanilla Cupcake, which looks good but tastes dry
So it seems Yonan and I are on the same page with B&W's Vanilla. I would like to put it out there that Vanilla is a very hard flavor to get right. As a matter of fact, I have yet to try a Vanilla cake in all of DC that is not thick and a tad on the dry side. Anyway, the favorite for Yonan's team was the "nearly perfect chocolate peanut butter, which one taster described as "Snickers as a cupcake -- and what's wrong with that?" You can see the Chocolate Peanut Butter cupcake pictured at the top of this posting.

Here's a look at the Cupcake Wars results after 3 weeks of taste testing:

Baked & Wired - 8.6
Buzz – 5.5
Lavender Moon Cupcakery - 5.3
Pastries by Randolph – 3.5
Cakelove – 2.8
Sticky Fingers – 2.1
What are your thoughts on Yonan's reviews of B&W and Lavender Moon?

Cupcakes in Georgetown Voice

Earlier this month, a journalist from the Georgetown Voice, Michael Keller, had contacted me with some questions for a column he was doing on cupcakes! The story was about cupcakes' rise in popularity over the years, more specifically in our area.
In analyzing why cupcakes are so popular, Keller says "the cupcake still retains that childhood particularity, evoking the delight of a birthday or special occasion treat, something out-of-the-ordinary and significant." Keller also talks about where to get cupcakes around town, and even promotes our DC/Metro Cupcake Meetup Group!

Through the Washington Post, I found out about a cupcake social taking place at Fresh this Wednesday! Here's the scoop -
"Georgetown boutique Fresh is hosting a cupcake social with frosted confections from neighbor Georgetown Cupcake, champagne and markdowns of up to 70 percent on the store's wares. Shopping and sweet treats? We can hardly imagine a better pairing. Wednesday, 6:30-9 p.m. 1205 Potomac St. NW. 202-965-7115. Free."

DC Cupcake Benefit, Tonight!

I hate to admit it, but I kind of missed the ball on this one. Tonight at the City Tavern Club in Georgetown, on the corner of Wisconsin and M, Miss DC 2008 (Katie Marie Grinold) is hosting the Cocktails & Cupcakes for Innocents at Risk event. What is that you ask? Have you rode the Metro lately and seen those awareness posters about human trafficking? Well, the proceeds from this event will benefit Innocents At Risk, a group that works to stop human trafficking. They'll be auctioning off items donated by Cafe Milano, the Nat's, and the Washington National Opera, to name a few. And, can't forget to mention that Georgetown Cupcake is catering the event with 250 cupcakes.
So, my apologies to anyone who would have liked to go (I know I would have!) for not letting you know sooner. Hopefully I'll find some good pictures and post them for you guys.

Meetup 1 - Baked & Wired

This morning was the first meetup for our DC/Metro Cupcake Group! And it was a lot of fun! The owner of Baked & Wired in Georgetown was kind enough to open up half an hour early to accommodate our group. Maggie, pictured below, told us all about Baked & Wired’s flavors for the day, which included Strawberry (made with real strawberries!), Carrot Cake, Red Velvet, Vanilla on Chocolate, Coconut, Vanilla with Chocolate Satin Frosting, and Karen’s Birthday Cupcake (Karen is the owner’s Grandmother, and the cupcake is her original recipe).

We all grabbed our cupcake and coffee and sat down in one of their lounge areas. We chatted up a storm for about an hour and a half, and talked about other area bakeries that might be good for upcoming meetups.

Out of all of the cupcakes we tried, I think our overall favorite was the Carrot Cake with the Strawberry coming in a close 2nd. For me, the only disappointment was the Red Velvet, as it didn’t taste anything like Red Velvet. All of the cupcakes were very thick, but this isn’t a bad thing. They were moist and rich, with the exception of the Vanilla cupcake which was actually pretty dry. I would definitely recommend Baked & Wired though. It’s in a great location, good coffee, friendly employees, tasty cupcakes, and lots of other great desserts (I heard the “Phig Newtons” are pretty good!)

If you have any recommendations about future meetup locations, feel free to post them! And if you'd like to join our meetup group (there's 70 of us so far!), visit the group page by clicking here. It was great meeting everyone, and I’m already looking forward to next time!

Hello Cupcake!

Penny Karas, Owner & Executive Pastry Chef of the much anticipated Hello Cupcake (set to open later this summer in Dupont), graciously offered me a sneak preview of her treats before the shop’s Grand Opening. With original flavors like the Velvet Elvis and Maya Favorite Cupcake, I was SUPER excited to make my way over to Penny’s place and put my taste buds to work. And work I did! After tasting 5 different flavors, I can safely say that Hello Cupcake's cupcakes are the best I have had in this area!

With charming little touches like both indoor and outdoor seating, recycled pink packing, a flashy pink chandelier, and the perfectly crafted cupcakes themselves, Hello Cupcake is all about the details. And you can taste Penny's attention to detail in each and every bite. I think it's this special attention that is going to make Hello Cupcake so successful. Here are my reviews:

Gluten Free Carrot Cake - Oh.My.God. GLUTEN FREE?!?! I’ve died and gone to cupcake heaven. The cream cheese icing was SO delicious it’s hard to put into words! The mixture of cinnamon, real carrots, walnuts, and pineapple was perfect. When you go to Hello Cupcake, you have GOT to try this masterpiece.

Vanilla Gorilla - A light and fluffy banana bread with an anything but average vanilla frosting. I gave one to a friend who is a banana bread connoisseur, and her eyes about bulged out of her head when she took her first bite. “This is AMAZING!!” I would have to agree. I've never really liked bananas, but I LOVED this cupcake.

Vegan German Chocolate - I tried this one both room temperature and warmed up. I think I prefer the warmed up version as it makes the caramel topping a little creamier. This combined with chocolate cake was a great combination.

Triple Coconut - My taste buds had a field day with this one. The Triple Coconut is exactly how a cupcake should taste: sweet, light, and moist. Normally I avoid coconut as I’m not a big fan, but this was just divine.

Peanut Butter Blossom - WOW. The peanut butter frosting on this cupcake is so creamy and delicious you must try it for yourself. Unlike many other peanut butter frostings I’ve had, this one is not at all oily or overpowering. It’s perfect. The chocolate cake was smooth and rich. Put them together and you’ve got one amazing combination.

You can find these and over 15 other flavors on Hello Cupcake's menu. Speaking of which, I asked Penny if we could be expecting any new flavors once the shop opens, to which she replied "Oh definitely! Coming up with new flavors is the best part." For more on what Penny had to say about her cupcakes and her shop, check out our conversation below:

(In regards to the Vegan German Chocolate Cupcake)
Penny: “The caramel topping doesn’t have the butter in it to make it really gooey, so it hardens almost into a caramel fudge, it’s awesome. If you wanted to have the gooeyness, I would recommend just warming it up. Pop it in the microwave for about 10 seconds and it goo’s right up.

Penny: And then this is Gluten Free Carrot Cake.

Danielle: OH those are my favorite!

Penny: Oh good! This is really good even if you’re not eating gluten free, so I think you’ll enjoy it but the real stuff is also amazing . You’ll have to come and have some of those some day! The gluten-free one has carrots, toasted walnuts, pineapple and coconut, filled with all kinds of goodness, and then a traditional cream cheese frosting and a dusting of cinnamon.

Danielle: I love the way you do your icing. I was checking out the website and everything is so cute, people are loving it! You know you’ve got so many good reviews already and you haven’t even opened. Everyone is just like, “I love the way they look!”

Penny: It kind of validates the whole idea of really going for a high end brand look too. I mean, I think the products are number one, and they’re really good, so that’s a good thing, but I also think that just having the brand appeal has really attracted people.

Danielle: People really go for presentation.

Penny: I think that’s true; and I wanted the shop itself to have a modern aesthetic. The whole idea behind the shop is that when you walk in it feels more like you’re walking into a little boutique.

Danielle: Yea, I read about your pink chandelier!

Penny: Hahaha Yea!

(Back to cupcakes)

Penny: This is Peanut Butter Blossom which is my basic Scharfenberger chocolate cake with peanut butter frosting, which is addictive. [This is] Vanilla Gorilla, which is banana cake and has real bananas, not just banana flavoring, and vanilla cream cheese frosting. It’s a really nice moist cake because of the Banana.

Danielle: Speaking of the Banana, your Velvet Elvis cracks me up.

Penny: Isn’t that great? I didn’t know if people would get the reference! There is another one called Lucy, “the sassy red head.” A friend of mine who is like 10 years younger than me said “are you sure younger people are going to get this reference?

Danielle: Oh, I definitely think so.

What I like most about the cupcakes from Hello Cupcake is that not only are the cake and frosting delicious on their own, but when you bite into them together, it's the perfect combination. They look great, they're moist, the flavors are rich but aren't overpowering; they’re absolutely delicious.

Penny was shocked that I came all the way from Bethesda to her corner of DC to try the cupcakes. Are you kidding?? People are going to be coming from all over to try these cupcakes! Keep your eyes and ears peeled for the Grand Opening later this summer, Hello Cupcake is going to be a huge hit.
