Best of Washington?

In a post from last month, I shared that Washingtonian Magazine will be throwing their Best of Party on July 8, from 7-10pm at the National Building Museum. Building up to that, Washingtonian Magazine released their Best of Washington July issue later last month. I didn't get around to picking up my copy until yesterday afternoon, but to my utter horror I flipped it open and read the following:

Best Place for Great Cupcakes
3. Baked 'n Wired

WHAT!?!?! Cakelove is number one?!?! Who voted on this and what drugs were they on?!!?! Of all the people who have read this blog, commented on it, or engaged in a cupcake discussion with me (which is quite a lot), not one single person has had anything positive to say about Cakelove cupcakes. If you're reading this and you've enjoyed Cakelove's cupcakes, please share with the rest of us what exactly you enjoyed, because I am rather confused.

Aside from my obvious disagreement with Cakelove's appearance on the "Best Of" list, I do agree that Baked & Wired deserves a spot up there. Unfortunately, Hello Cupcake hasn't opened yet, because I firmly believe that once owner Penny Karas opens up shop later this month and Washingtonian's have the opportunity to taste her treats, Hello Cupcake will be making an appearance on that top 3 (at number one, in my opinion).

I still have not tasted Georgetown Cupcake's goods. I know I know, but I just haven't got around to placing an order ahead of time since I refuse to wait in that line. I'll get on that in the next couple weeks.

What do you think of the list? Anyone you think should have been included or left off? Let's discuss!!

heh...they must've had a different batch of cupcakes that we ALL had! but, you know how it is though, someone reputable opens something up and it automatically is number one, regardless of quality!

Sounds like someone's in thier pocket. There is not a CHANCE they could have one if they actually tried that garbage. So many of my friends like to think they look cool and order them for parties and then they NEVER get eaten b/c they taste like junk. And HELLO!?! They are UGLY! At least get one of the two right. Okay, sorry, vent over. lol.

Unbelievable! All I could think is that people only knew of only 3 places in DC to get cupcakes, which is sad. Baked & Wired definitely deserves #1, in my book, with Georgetown at #2. We went to Georgetown on their opening day--delicious cupcakes, though a little too buttery a frosting for me, and the staff was SO nice despite running out of change and vanilla cupcakes!

Can't wait to descend on Dupont for the new one...

I feel like Cakelove must've been chosen because everyone knows the name. But it SUCKS. I'm so excited about Hello Cupcake...later this month, really?!?! :-D

Agreed on CakeLove. Their cupcakes are way too dry.

I'm a fan of Georgetown Cupcake, and love the Red Velvet.

I also like the chocolate raspberry cupcake from Sticky Fingers.

Thanks for the shout-out! Actually, the three cupcake "bests" were chosen by our readers—more than 2,500 people submitted surveys, and, after all the voting, those three cupcake places came out on top. Maybe people just aren't aware of other choices out there? I'm not sure, but either way, those were our readers' picks! Maybe next year, you can get your blog readers to weigh in so another bakery can make the top three.

Thanks, Emily! I was curious what the sample size of the survey was...that is a lot of voters! You're right, maybe people aren't aware of all the other good cupcakes places out there. I'll definitely take your advice and have the blog readers weigh in next year!

Just to let you know, lines at Georgetown Cupcake aren't long on Tuesdays (I am sharing my secret to getting their cupcakes quick) and are really good!

Although I will agree with everyone here that Cake Love cupcakes are usually bad, I have had them now and then when they were great. I think the trick is to catch them within a few hours of being baked. Once they have sat in the refrigerator for even a small amount of time they are horrible. I've been trying to verify if there really is a health code that says baked goods must be refrigerated as Warren says. I never refrigerate my baked goods unless they contain cream cheese or whipped cream. Usually the high amount of sugar in the cake/frosting will preserve it for several days without refrigeration. On another note, Warren's new book "Cake Love" is awesome. The cakes are definitely good when you make them at home. This makes me think his recipes are good, but something in his bakery production makes them dry out too fast. However, his cupcakes are uglier than ones I make at home. I'm all about taste over look, but if you can't take time to pipe your icing on or do something attractive, why bother to even sell your cupcakes?

Georgetown Cupcake is terrible, and as far as I know you still can't place orders ahead of time unless they're for very large quantities.
And their frosting isn't buttery, it's cream-cheesy. They don't like buttercream, so they use cream cheese frosting.

Ok, can I just say I love Cake Love's New German Chocolate cupcake? It's my favorite. Ever. Sue me.

I think some people get turned off by trying the cupcakes before they're at room temperture, which makes for dry cake and yucky frosting.

And yes, I've tried the others too. All good. Just different.
